An ecotourist route through the natural area of “Los Barruecos” is one of the best options to combine with a cultural visit to the “Ciudad Vieja de Cáceres”, located only 17 km south of Cáceres, in the town of Malpartida de Cáceres.
This is a protected natural area of notorious uniqueness and beauty where, through a guided tour, we will show you how its spectacular landscape of granite boulders is combined with a varied avian fauna, extensive water bodies and archaeological sites, all of which has led this area, of some 319 hectares, to be declared a “protected natural area”.Natural Monument“.
The berrocal landscape with granite modeling forms of great scenic and scientific interest and exceptional educational value is harmoniously combined with the four reservoirs or ponds built in the past for agricultural use and as wool laundries. The area is an important habitat for different species of birds, especially white stork colonies (as well as cormorants, grebes, stilts…).
The historical and cultural importance given by the archaeological sites (rock engravings/paintings, necropolis with more than 50 anthropomorphic tombs, remains of a Neolithic settlement and a Roman settlement) and the wool laundry complete the values of the area, to which are added the existence of a contemporary art museum of undeniable relevance: the Vostell-Malpartida Museum, which integrates in the beautiful landscape the works of Wolf Vostell (Leverkusen 1932-Berlin, 1998), a Spanish-German artist of international prestige, a fundamental figure of post-war contemporary art, discoverer of the Dé-coll/age technique, father of Happening in Europe and initiator of the Fluxus movement and video art.
In addition, if you have been fans of the series “Game of Thrones” we will also take you to the places that were used as real locations for the filming of the 7th season of the series.
