Through a hiking route of 4.5 kilometers that starts at the Sanctuary of the Virgen del Puerto, we will cross the Protected Landscape of Valcorchero, a protected natural area of high aesthetic value, from where we can enjoy wonderful panoramic views of the historic city of Plasencia and wide views of the Jerte Valley to the east, and the mountains of the Sierra de Gata and Las Hurdes to the north.
Valcorchero is located in the foothills of the Tras La Sierra Mountains, known as Sierra del Gordo. It is adorned by a spectacular forest mass of cork oaks that give it its name (cork valley) but also find other rich tree and shrub vegetation alternating with granite outcrops in the form of bowls that adorn a landscape that seems to have been drawn for the ride. The Valcorchero mountain was for many years the granite quarry from which many of the facades of the stately homes and religious buildings of Pláceres originate.
But along the route through this natural place we will also see some of the elements that provide this space with a valuable ethnographic heritage reflecting the traditional uses and exploitation of the mountain: the cave of Boquique, huts and viewpoints, pigsties, fountains, remains of aqueducts, or the old paved road that served as a link between Plasencia and the Ambroz valley.
