Verdehesa offers you the possibility of living an authentic transhumant experience that will leave you with indelible memories and experiences and that will intensify your passion for the pastoral and livestock world, its past history, its present vicissitudes and its uncertain future.
And we can do it because transhumance is still alive in Monfragüe, sculpting landscapes, preserving biodiversity, connecting ecosystems, producing food of enormous quality and generating multiple environmental and cultural goods and services.
Interested? So read on…
It is the brothers Jerónimo and Diego Martín, and Jorge and Luis García who keep the transhumance alive because twice a year they move more than half a thousand Avileñas-Negra ibérica and Moruchas cows, crossing the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve on a route that runs between the lands of Trujillo – where the winter pastures of the dehesas are located – and those of the western end of the Sierra de Gredos, in Tornavacas (head of the Jerte Valley) and Gil García (in the province of Ávila) – where the cattle enjoy fresh mountain pastures in the summer months.
It is a pastoral practice that these four brothers have been developing for generations and that Verdehesa has joined in recent years to, through images, narrate it and raise awareness of its value and, in parallel, outline the quality tourism product that we can offer you.
Transhumance takes place twice a year: towards the end of June, when the herds go up to the mountain passes of the Sierra de Gredos, and in December, when they go down to the pastures of Trujillo. During some days of this journey, the cows run along the historic corridor of the Cañada Real Trujillana, crossing the National Park and the Monfragüe Biosphere Reserve from south to north, between the towns of Plasencia and Trujillo, with the following approximate itinerary for the summer, which is reversed in the winter:
We encourage you to join the herd to enjoy a unique emotional experience and also help to keep transhumance and livestock trails alive, because part of the profits from your visit will be invested by Verdehesa to meet some of the needs of the shepherds and their cows.
All the details of the route and the reservation and purchase system will be available when the shepherds finalize the dates of the transhumance, although we offer you some important information below:
It should be noted that unforeseen events can always arise that modify the schedules, given that we work with herds of about 250 head, but precisely this unpredictability is part of the attraction of the experience, of the authenticity of the proposal.
